In my point of view, increasing productivity of agriculture products is probably the solution of reducing green house gas emission. However, boost agricultural productivity should not extend a farmland. In the past, extension the farm land was done by clearing or burning. The activty cause of emission.
Yes, very good article. It is good that they have done such research, and most probably the reasoning is true, as high-yield meant less need to burn down forest for farmlands. What I think then they should do is to turn these high-yield to organic produce, using natural fertilizers and such, instead of the chemical based pesticides.
For Thailand,The rice production process by farming, which agriculture is the impact on global warming. First process, the process of preparation before planting.Farmers have to burn rice stubble for easily to plough the field. For sure,It release greenhouse gases such as carbondioxide, carbonmonoxide etc. Second process, the process of planting In this process, farmer will flow water into paddy field.Water is trapped in the area until the rice is harveste.Methane is released from this process because the degradation is anaerobic process. All this can be seen clearly in calculating carbon footprint. For example,Thai Airways is the first airline in the world to provide Carbon Footprint information on thai foods. The signature dishes curry "Kiew-Wan" with steamed Thai Hom Mali Rice were calculate carbon footprint 13.9 kg carbondioxide per 250 g serving. The rice production process is the process that release of the most carbondioxide.
Forturately, there are studies about farming using EM degradation instead of burning rice stubble and the reseach about rice production without flow water flooding into paddy field.

This is a good example of the connections among things in the environment. If you do something that means one effect is occured.
ReplyDeleteThink about "sufficiency economy" for Industrial Ecology and Environment. ^____^
